Abstract

Mental health discourse has reached a broader audience on TikTok, intensifying awareness through content creation. However, several mental health vocabulary usages are evident in language trends and permeate online. Hence, the researchers aim to examine [a] the preconceived definitions of TikTok users via comments about mental health terms, [b] the implications of online mental health discussion on mental health's status quo from an expert, and [c] the dominant ideologies of the construction and deconstruction of social norms about mental health by TikTok users. The Usage-based Theory of Tomasello (2003) and the Ideological Theory of van Dijk (1998) anchored the study's conjecture. Notably, the researchers descriptively, interpretatively, and socially investigated the language use of mental health vocabulary on TikTok under Fairclough's Three-Dimensional Framework. In the text analysis, the study revealed that most TikTok users utilize mental health vocabulary inappropriately in various contexts. In the interviews, TikTok users see social media as a double-ended variable for promoting awareness and misinformation, whereas the expert intensifies its role in exposing stigma. Remarkably, the expert is more concerned with the trivializing and misusing clinical terms phenomenon, while TikTok users lean on oversimplification and social media influence upon using a vocabulary. Notably, TikTok users acknowledged the risk of trivialization and the potential for destigmatization. Finally, the expert highlighted the escalated stigmatization due to confusion of mental health terms discussion. Consequently, this study is relevant to today's mental health studies concerning newly-coined internet slang, which derives from psychological terminologies, to combat mental health misconceptions.
